LAPS Dog Show April 14th

Success for our St Valentine's Celebration 2013

L.A.P.S. friends and supporters enjoyed a night to remember on 14th February to celebrate St Valentine's night. 82 guests feasted on the culinary delights of Zhong Hua (Suzy's) restaurant, Pego and were later entertained by Luigi Vernazza. Luigi sang romantic songs to listen to and some to dance to, he charmed his audience with his easy style as well as giving the ladies red roses and chocolates!  The dancing went on till late but gradually people were going home feeling loved and well fed from this memorable evening. An enormous thank you to everyone involved. The unwanted animals that LAPS cares for benefitted by the grand total of €610 - thank you for your support.
Luigi can be contacted on 609 770 865 or sheila.vernazza@virgin.net

Donation to Caritas

Chrissie is here presenting the promised donation from LAPS to Caritas of €350, namely 15% of the money raised on the charity walk of May 6th.

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT

Wednesday 9th May

The Bay Radio charity walk on Sunday was an overwhelming success!

We had 76 registered walkers plus many pushchairs and a disabled buggy.

There was a huge crowd of very happy dogs leading their owners, including seven dogs from the Shelter that were walked by some kind volunteers. It is estimated that about 30 of the dogs taking part had either been adopted from or helped by LAPS. First home was Waheed and Toby, they completed the 5km in 45 minutes, we think this was Toby’s pace rather than Waheed’s!

Once all the sponsorship money has been handed in, the total raised will be €1924 – 15% of this, €288.60 will be used to buy non-perishable food for Caritas to distribute to the many disadvantaged families in Pego. And of course, the balance will be used to help the unwanted animals at the Shelter.

The only thing that spoilt the day was when Phil took our seven dogs home he found a box left at the gate to the Shelter with two puppies of about 3 weeks old shivering inside. Thankfully with so many dogs lovers gathered together it wasn’t too long before a volunteer came forward to bottle feed them at home until they were ready to come back into the Shelter – well done Dee & John.
Everybody agreed it was a great event, the walk through the orange groves was so peaceful surrounded by beautiful scenery – and Phil & John’s cold drinks and hot dogs were very much appreciated by the hungry walkers at the end.

Thank you and well done to everybody who supported LAPS, Bay Radio are hoping to make the walk an annual event – so next year bigger & better! Special thanks of course, to Dan Gibbs for keeping track of the money handed in on the day and then completing the walk. Some of the signs had been removed by the time he was on his way and he estimates he did nearly 7kms instead of 5kms

I have attached some of the photos that Andrew Ward took to record the happy day, if you wish to see all the photos I'm sure he will email them onto you. A few are from my camera but there are more that are not shown.

Chrissie

Garden Fete

Despite very heavy rain and cold winds our Garden Fete on 14th April was a huge success.

New2You Fashions had many beautiful items to suit everybody. Angela's Bling stall showed diamonds can still be a girl's best friend! Doreen's cup cakes & Easter delights sold very quickly as guests enjoyed them with a glass of Cava. And Sue's wonderful garden looked beautiful even in the pouring rain.

Our supporters and friends helped to raise a massive €1005 - all of which will be used to give our many unwanted animals a new start in life. A very big thank you to everybody who supported the day.

The St Valentine Dinner & Dance

The St Valentine Dinner & Dance on February 11th, was supported by nearly 80 friends & volunteers of L.A.P.S. The evening included good food & wine in the banquet room of Salo Filo's, Pego.

Throughout music was provided by the O.K. Band from Benissa, who kindly gave their services free of charge for the Charity. The party mood escalated after dinner, when O.K. notched up the volume and our guests danced the night away. Proceeds from ticket sales, the raffle & donations raised a very welcome €780 towards the care of our many unwanted animals. Well done to our Shelter Manager, Phil, for organising the evening & many thanks to everybody who supported us - hope you had fun!

Our Mural

Thanks to the skill of local artists, L.A.P.S. now has a better view! Many hours of work, by a group of friends from the Painting for Pleasure Art Club Rafol, have produced a wonderful mural on two walls of our isolation kennels. The mural shows many of our own dogs, that have been adopted throughout the last year, playing happily in the grass, with Pego village and the wonderful mountains in the background. Guided by their tutor Jan Calderwood and mural artist Pedro Mateo, L.A.P.S. would like to thank everybody who was involved in this project.

The Monte Pego Theatre Company

The Monte Pego Theatre Company's latest production of "Blythe Spirit" entertained their audiences and brought a smile to the faces of the abandoned dogs & pups in the care of LAPS at their Shelter in Pego! The Company kindly gave a donation for each ticket sold for their three recent performances in Rafol. A cheque for €270 was presented by Fred Miller last Saturday to the President of the Charity. Our very grateful thanks to everybody involved in the production and to the theatre goers for supporting the event. The money will go towards vets' treatment and hopefully some tasty Christmas treats for our canine residents.

Who are we?

Who are we? LAPS is a registered charity based near Pego (Alicante), Spain. Its aim is to offer medical aid and re-homing to local animals in need.

We are sponsored by The Charity Bookstall, so please buy your books in their stall on Pego market every Thursday!

You can visit us on Facebook at our English site: www.facebook.com/LapsSanctuaryPego or our site in Español: www.facebook.com/lapspego.

LAPS would not be able to operate without help from supporters. We welcome donations of money so we can pay vet bills, buy food, beds, medicine and other necessities as well as maintain and expand our shelter. Donations of goods, for example unopened tins and bags of dog and cat food, leads, bowls, bedding material for our residents in the shelter are also very welcome. We are also desperate for volunteers helping with administration, cleaning, DIY work etc. a couple of hours every week.
